In Hoi An, unlike people elsewhere in much of Vietnam, they learned to build houses with two floors centuries ago. The first floor is there because it's usually the most practical place to live. The second floor is there so that they can put all their stuff somewhere safe, when the river almost every year rises a couple of meters or so.
