De fleste "gravsteinene" i Gambia var helt enkle metallplater på en stang. Fornuftig, så lenge trekors umiddelbart ville blitt spist av termitter, og folk har mer enn nok av andre ting å bruke penger på enn de døde.

Denne graven var litt mer forseggjort enn de andre. Kanskje var det en smed som mistet et barn så altfor tidlig?

 

Most "tombstones" in Gambia were simple metal plates mounted on metal rods. It makes a lot of sense in a country where stone is hard to find, wooden crosses would immediately be devoured by termites, and where people have too much else to spend their money on than on their dead...

This was the grave that touched me the most.
