Mithril

Description: Mithril, also known as truesilver among dwarves, is a whitish metal which is very light, but also very durable. In the Unlit World, mithral denotes an alloy of steel and mithril which reduces the weight of any armor significantly - a mithral armor is about half the weight of a normal armor of the same type. Mithral is considered to be half-and-half of steel and mithril in weight - for ease when calculating how much mithril one can get by melting down old armor parts.

Game Mechanics: Mithral armor counts as the next lighter armor (light armor is still light), reduces ACP by one, and increases the armor's maximum Dexterity bonus by two. Mithral weapons are lighter than common, and is granted a +1 circumstance bonus to-hit because of their easier wielding.

Cost: A mithral armor costs about eight to ten times what a normal armor costs. It is usually masterwork as well, further increasing the price of the armor piece. The same goes for mithril weapons.

Examples in the Campaign:

Duergar Masterwork Spiked Mithral Full Plate:
Armor bonus +8, max Dex bonus +3, ACP -4, armor spikes, weight 28 lb.
Cost: About 19 000 gp.
Made for the duergar master samurai, he added armor spikes as an afterthought, making it slightly more expensive and heavier than the armor of the drow cleric.
Drow Masterwork Mithral Full Plate:
Armor bonus +8, max dex bonus +3, ACP -4, weight 25 lb.
Cost: 16 500 gp.
Made for the drow cleric, this armor provides excellent protection, as well as being light enough to use without much penalty.

Serrated

Description: A weapon with a serrated edge has a nasty, jagged edge on it instead of the smooth edge common to slashing weapons. Though impacting on the structural strength of the weapon, a serrated weapon is capable of inflicting horrendous wounds if it catches flesh. Serrated weapons are considered more 'evil' than normal weapons, as they make wounds that are more difficult to heal correctly - and they usually leave extremely nasty scars.

Game Mechanics: A serrated weapon must be slashing, as only slashing weapons have much of an edge to make serrated. A serrated weapon has its critical multiplier increased by one, but has its critical range decreased by one (minimum 20). Furthermore, its hardness is reduced by 5, representing the ease one can destroy a serrated weapon with - making a serrated weapon particularly vulnerable to the Sunder feat.

Cost: If the weaponsmith is willing to make a serrated weapon, it will double the base cost. If the weapon is to be of masterwork quality, then that cost is also doubled.

War Mattock

Description: A war mattock is - basically - a two-handed pick designed for war. Though a war mattock is usually double-headed - for balance, like the greataxe is double-headed - a war mattock is not a double weapon. War mattocks are sometimes used by duergar, but is considered a rare weapon, and requires an Exotic Weapon Proficiency to wield proficiently.

Game Mechanics: two-handed (exotic), damage d10, critical x4, weight 15 lb., piercing.

Cost: 40 gp - when it is available at all.

Examples in the Campaign:

Duergar Masterwork Mithral War Mattock:
To-hit bonus +2 (+1 masterwork +1 mithral), damage d10, critical x4, weight 8 lb., piercing.
Cost: About 680 gp.
This war mattock was found in the Char'gr wastelands. The duergar that had this weapon strapped to him, had been attacked by something burrowing under him, and was almost completely buried. His equipment showed him to be an elite soldier associated with the Oredelver clan, though the war mattock had no distinguishing marks except for the sigil that showed its maker to be Ghyrik Silverhammer, making the weapon anywhere from 50 years to 250 years old.

The Hammer of the Maker

Description: The Hammer of the Maker seems to be a worn forge hammer of exceptional quality, forged in one piece of an alloy of meteoric iron, adamantite and mithril. Though of exceptional quality, it has no ornaments of any kind, and is rounded at the edges - as if it has seen heavy use.

History: Though the Hammer was the possession of the Stronginthearm clan of Thorbarkel for almost 200 years, the history of the Hammer goes much longer than that. Its exact origin is difficult to pinpoint, but various dwarven master smiths have been known to forge wondrous armor and weaponry with this hammer for the better part of 3 000 years.

Legend has it that the Hammer of the Maker was originally made by the Maker himself, he who forged the dwarves in his image. Though this may be something of an overstatement, it is very old - and very, very powerful. Nevertheless, the name - the Hammer of the Maker - stuck with the Hammer itself, and if it ever had any other name, it is not known in this age.

The Hammer was 'liberated' by duergar forces more than a thousand years ago, and has thereafter been a hotly contested piece of equipment ever since. Many duergar master smiths has forged powerful weaponry for use both against duergar, dwarf and other races, but the magnificent arms and armor of legend that the dwarves forged with this Hammer has so far been out of reach for the duergar master smiths.

How the Stronginthearm clan came to be in possession of this unique item is difficult to say. It was probably stolen in the raid that followed the declaration of Blood Hunt made against the then-powerful family of Rubyheart. Though the Stronginthearm clan never had anything to do with that Blood Hunt - not officially at least - the Hammer turned up in the hands of a Stronginthearm master smith some three years later.

Game mechanics: The Hammer will grant a +2 circumstance bonus for exceptional tools when forging any sort of weaponry or armor. That is, however, not its major power.

In theory, a master smith can forge any kind of weapon or armor with this hammer, as long as he has the raw materials available, and that the item in question is composed mostly of metal. By infusing the item with the master smith's personal life force, the master smith is able to will the enchantment into the unfinished item.

Cost: The Hammer of the Maker is priceless - quite literally.
