Origin:

Catherine Green was a reserved girl throughout her childhood. Although not shy, she never really voiced her opinions very often, however. She was, however, intelligent. Although not a quick thinker, she worked and graduated with a degree in physics while becoming proficient in other studies as well.

Her studies came to the notice of Dr. Roger Chang, a prominent scientist. Impressed with her dedication, he offered her job on his current research project. She happily accepted.

The Chang Project was designed to try to tap into extra-dimensional energies as a power source. Chang and a team of engineers designed an apparatus that was supposed to break into another dimension and harness its energies. Chang was confident his theories were correct; a Nobel Prize was soon to be his.

However, the project was expensive, and funding was about to be cut. In order to save his dream, he began to push his crew. He made them work extra hours, ignore safety margins to save time, whatever it took to make his dream a reality. Catherine and the other researchers were concerned with his obsession, and for the first time in her life, Catherine actively voiced her concern. However, Chang did not listen. Soon, he would make history.

The time had come. Everything was in order. His crew ready, Chang activated the apparatus to break the dimensional barrier. Unfortunately, he cut one too many corners...

The rip in the dimensional barrier only lasted an instant, but the release of energies overload the apparatus and caused an explosion. Everyone in the lab was killed, except Catherine who was dying. However, during the time the barrier was broken, an alien entity , a hawkspirit, had fallen through into our dimension. Trapped in a strange world and dying because she was in an alien environment, her only hope was to bond her lifeforce with a creature native to this dimension. The only candidate was a dying Catherine, so she merged with her. But the process was too draining, and the hawkspirit's consciousness faded into oblivion...

Catherine awoke in a hospital. She was told of the explosion, how rescue workers managed to save her, and that she was the only survivior. Eventually, she was released, and she took time off to sort out her grief.

One day, while shopping, the villian Famine of the 7 Horseman decided to go on a torturing run at the same store that Catherine was at. People withered at Famine's touch, like they were dying of scurvy. Catherine was cutoff from an exit, and soon Famine would see and attack her. Instinctively, Catherine began tomove. It almost seemed like she was flying. Then when she went over Famine's head, she realized that she WAS flying. Somehow, someway she transformed herself into a hawk with silver feathers. She didn't get much time to remain in awe. Famine had spotted her and gave chase. Instinctively again, she turned and a bolt of electricity shot from her talons. (talons?!, oh boy...) Famine roared in pain.

The battle insued for several minute before Famine retreated, vowing vengeance. Catherine soon flew out of the store and then landed some distance away, in human form. Shocked, Catherine tried to forget the incident, since she didn't want to try to break into the superheorics' business.

However, Famine returned along with Fear and Dread. Famine again randomly attacked innocents threatening to kill unless this "Silverhawk" showed itself again. Catherine reluctanly forced herself into hawk form and again engaged Famine in battle. However, Fear's Worm Scepter detected strong magical auras eminating from her. Seeing yet another magical power source to use Fear began to use his mental powers against it. She was able to fend off his first attacks, but she eventually left rather than try to fight outnumbered. Famine claimed victory, but Fear vowed to capture this "Silverhawk" for his own purposes.

The papers splashed the pictures of the battle across the front page. Head- lines included Famine's "winning the rematch" and somehow Fear's comments on his interest in "Silverhawk" (the name caught on like wildfire). Knowing that there will be another confrontation. She began life as a superheroine in order to learn the full extent of her abilities while finding allies in her fight against the 7 Horsemen. She currently operates as an independent, but is looking for a group. In the meantime, she works as a research assistant at a nearby university.

Motivation/Personality:

Catherine doesn't really enjoy superheroics, but she feels if she doesn't try to develop her powers she'll suffer at the hands of Fear (she's right, of course). Although still somewhat reserved, she has been more aggresive since the lab accident. Since she can only communicate via Mind Link in hawk form, she tends only to communicate when she feels she has something to contribute. She's sure that her powers had something to do with the lab accident, but she's not sure how.

Powers/Tactics:

Catherine has the ability to turn herself into a hawk with silver feathers and back to human again. She doen't know where her clothes go when she trans- forms, but she doesn't really want to find out either. In hawk form, she can fly and has razor-sharp talons. The silver feathers are very hard, providing extra protection against attacks. As a hawk, she is only 15" tall and somewhat harder to see and attack due to size. Although she cannot verbally communicate, she somehow has limited telepathic abilites in hawk form (Mind Link). She can also release powerful bolts of electrical energy, but the energy seems to be derived from a means other than atypical paranormal electrical gereation.

In combat, she prefers to fly high and let her energy blast do the work. If that doesn't work, she'll try her claws -- flying out of sight then try to attack by surprise using her size to her advantage. Of course, some member of the Horsemen have damage shields. When she finds out, she'll try to dodge and draw their attacks for as long as she can.

Silverhawk tries control the damge done with her EB against normals. She will NEVER use her claws against any normal unless absolutely necessary, and even then she'll pull her punch.

The hawkspirit in Catherine isn't dead, but is in something of a coma. Catherine has access to some of the spirit's abilities, but she is unaware of the hawkspirit's presence. If the hawkspirit should awaken, it will tell Catherine of the events at the lab accident, and then try to support Catherine in whatever necessary, with the hopes of returning to her own dimension. It is probable that Silverhawk would gain new abilities if the hawkspirit awoke.

Disads:

The 7 Horsemen's interest in Silverhawk is outlined above. Demon also senses mystical energies from her and currently seek to capture her for their own purposes. Due to the mechanics of the bonding, Silverhawk is somewhat more susceptible to mystical attacks.

Silverhawk is also claustrophobic, and if she's trapped in someway like a cage, she'll panic, blasting at the cage and probably whoever might be near.

Possible Extensions and Campaign Use:

A worthy NPC heroine to kick of an adventure. The 7 Horsemen have 3rd. edition stats in the supplement WRATH OF THE SEVEN HORSEMEN. If you don't have it, you can use Demon or make up you're own versions of the Horsemen. A brief description of each member.

FEAR: founder and leader; he wields the Worm Scepter, which granted him and the rest of the Horseman there powers. Mainly, he can cause fear inothers.

DREAD: an ancient Norse spirit bound to Fear through a special ceremony; he wields a sword which can blind and weaken targets (CON drain) while slicing as well.

DESTRUCTION: the only female and most powerful member, she has incredible physical stats as well as powerful energy blasts.

WAR: master of combat, has high STR, also wields a powerful hand axe against tougher foes. He can also cause berserkism in people (limited MInd Control)

FAMINE: can drain END, STUN, and other stats which would be appropriate to someone of his nature. He's very irrational.

PLAGUE: has a transformation attack which makes someone very ill (OCV,DCV penalties. He can also turn desolid at will.

DEATH: mute in villian form. Has growth, can turn desolid, and razor sharp claws. Goes for blood at almost all cost.

The last 5 horseman enjoy their aspects, and Fear allows them to exercise mayhem when he doesn't have any immediate plans (Destruction destroy, Plague and Famine make people weak, War and Death are mecenaries). As a group, although they should have 10 to 20 more active points in attacks than supers, they do not work well as a team. They listen to no one but Fear, but Fear at best can only give suggestions to War. War tends to act more solo on team missions.

Dread is bound to Fear. He is a spirit that has no other purpose but to serve Fear. He is Fear's bodyguard.

Famine, Plague, and Fear have Damage Reduction. The other members have high defenses. All member have relative high DEX and high defensive ECV and or high mental defense.

The Worm Scepter is an alien artifact which grant its user whatever power that suits the user. In Fear's case, he can summon a person's aspect (a single, defining personal trait) and grant that person superpowers. He has no control over what the aspect will be. Although the Scepter is the source of power, all members can shift to villian id and back, and it would time and mystic tinkering to reverse the effects of the Scepter.

In general, the Horsemen are tough and should make the heroes sweat every step of the way.
