Description:
Simon Trumble is a big man. Abnormally so by most standards. He's tall enough to have to duck going through doors, and broad enough that he has to turn sideways to get through. He looks like a charicature of a body builder brought to life. Usually, he'll be wearing a suit, something conservsative in cut, dark in colour. His face is bland and his hair is thin and fair combed back from his forehead.

As he moves across a room, he moves with exaggerated care, as though the world he liven in was made from spun glass and tissue paper. If he smells of anything at all, its soap, clean shirts and a touch of after-shave. When he speaks, his voice is calm and quiet and his manner friendly, but slightly reserved and carefully polite.

His eyes seem to reflect the sorrows of the world.

Character Concept:

Stumble is a brick who never quite got his strength under control. He experiences occasional "surges" of strength adding up to 30 pts to the strength he uses for any task. This, combined with his chronic bad luck makes him appear clumsy, and so has earned him the nick-name of "Stumble".

His usual line of work is as a bodyguard/bouncer. Anywhere you might need a large intimidating man wearing a suit. It's not what he would have chosen, but since he gained his powers, it's all he seems suited for, no pun intended.

Explanation of Powers:

The +30 Str is under the direct control of the GM, who should turn it on at inportune moments: ("Simon - pass me that priceless ming va...never mind"). Of course, he should also allow Stumble to control it himself when it helps the plot. (The trawler needs to be lifted now! The big villain just *won't* fall down).

Background:

Simon Trumble is 34, British, and a very reluctant superhuman. He never wanter to be a paranormal, and has no idea how he became one. As a young man he noticed that he was slowly getting stronger, and was quite happy with the state of affairs - except that the process showed no sign of stopping.

He has no intention of becoming a superhero: He'd feel stupid dressed up in tights and cape and calling himself something like "thunderfist". Blunderfist would be more like it, he'd say. All he wants to do is make a living and do his job well. It doesn't seem much to ask of the world.

Despite the occasionally dubious nature of his employment, Simon is, at heart, a good soul. He hates having to hurt people and will always look for the minimum force solution to any problem. He is a sucker for a good cause, a hard luck story or a damsel in distress, and has been known to let villains go, on the understanding that they use this chance to reform their lives and make a contribution to society.

His hobbies include watching stage magicians, and tropical fish. His pet hates are ruined suits and being called "Stumble".

Identifying Quotes:

"I'm asking you nicely. I don't want to hurt you!"
"Sorry! Was it very expensive?"
"I'm afraid I don't shake hands, sir. Nothing personal."
"You just tore my new suit! Do you know how much it costs to get suits made in this size?"
"Be careful what you wish for...you just might bloody get it!"

Tactics:

Minimum violence solutions, always. Stumble likes to use presence attacks to discourage petty troublemakers. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work with paranormals and as his reputation gets around, it works less and less.

Remember, Simon is a bodyguard, not a hired thug. His major priority is to get his employer out of any trouble, unharmed. This can often mean a fighting retreat from the scene, staying just long enough to cover his employer's escape. He doesn't like hurting people and has no wish to prolong any fight. Do the job, minimum force.

He has knowledge skills dealing with the area he works in and the forces likely to bother his employers. (Usually he prefers to work for the honest citizenry, but if he has been working for criminals he will be studying superheroes as well). So, entering an area he will check for possible retreats, useful hiding places or safe houses, and will check everyone entering/approaching to see if they ring any bells. If he recognises a threat he will react appropriately. If he knows a brick can take his best, he won't hold back. If we sees a martial artist he will throw something big. Of course, this is after he tries to get his charge out the back door and away.

Failing that, he likes to use passive measures: Grab and restrain (no squeeze) is fairly safe. If continued violence is called for he will up the power gradually.

Stumble works well with other trained bodyguards, but will have different priorites from most heroes/villains should he have to work with them.

Sample Encounters/Shtick:

Franco's Wine Bar. The evening shift is getting underway, and the place is filling up. Simon has been working here for three weeks, helping out at the bar and keeping an eye on things in general. So far he hasn't broken anything more expensive than a new box of glasses. Mr.Caprietti was very good about that, all things considered.

Just about now, the door opens and in come a bunch of kids. Leather jackets and punk hairdos, not at all the sort of custom Mr.Capriatti is trying to attract. Add to that they are loud and rowdy: Simon glances quickly at the owner sitting in the corner, and Mr.Caprietti gives him a quick nod. Good.

Simon eases his bulk from behind the bar and carefully walks to block the lead punk. He stands up to his full height looms over the kid. "Not tonight, boys. Private party. You'll have to leave, I'm afraid."

The punk isn't impressed. "Big man hey?" As if by magic a knife appears. "Maybe I've got something here to cut down to size, hey?"

Simon looks at the kid, then picks up a wine glass, carefully, from the bar. He opens his mouth, bites the bowl of the glass off the stem, chews carefully and swallows. "Now," he says, "about your knife..." and makes as if to reach for the kid. The punks leave.

Simon follows them to the door and stands watching them to make sure they go. >From halfway down the street one shouts "Hey! Stumble! How are you on bullets?" There's a bang, a sudden blow to the midriff and the punks are gone, scattered up the street. He looks after them for a second or two, then shrugs and goes back inside. The job comes first. Always.

Inside, Simon goes back behind the bar to examine the damage. There's a nasty looking cut where the bullet hit. "Not to worry, sir," he reassures his employer, "it'll be healed by the time I go off duty. Just pass me something to stop the bleeding. Tsk. Look at this - another suit ruined. I can't believe they ruined my suit!"

Possible Extensions and Campaign Use:

Stumble's powers are about where they should be for his points base. Experience would go on Dex, Con, Body, PD, ED, skill levels and improved skills. And if he can find a tailor that will do a formal suit from kelvar or some such high-tech material, he will go for it - most of his money seems to go on new suits - it's an occupational hazzard. A personal phone would be nice too, if he can find one armoured to withstand 40 Str. And if he is in one place for any length of time, he will start armouring his living quaters and work area, just so he can relax a little without wondering what he is going to break next.

If you wanted to boost him to 250 pts base, try something like:

Str 60 50
Dex 20 30
Con 28 36
Bod 20 20
Int 13 3
Ego 11 2
Pre 25 15
Com 12 1
PD 25 15
ED 21 15
Spd 4 15
Rec 16 0
End 56 0
Stn 59 0
and maybe add a few points to his skills.

Ways to use stumble: Well he makes a good NPC hero. He's not a glory grabber and he's often a liability to have around. I often find it's good to have one or NPC team members so if you have a newcomer in the group, they can try a session or two with one of the established characters before designing their own.

He can be used as a wild card in a few scenarios. One week he's covering the retreat of a crime boss, the next he's helping them defend the mayor.

And if all else fails, and your group are finding it hard to find a caretaker after Mechanon's last attack - well a man's got to eat, after all.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Simon Trumble. Be nice to him. He's had a hard day!
