Jeg prøver ikke å være negativ, altså, men da jeg dro fra Perth og ut til kysten var omtrent det første jeg møtte en due som lå i en oljeflekk ved stranda og var død. Og med det passer det i grunnen å fortelle at Australia faktisk er verdens verste forurensere, målt pr innbygger. De slår både Kina og USA med god margin.

Litt av grunnen er såklart at landet har ganske få innbyggere, så det er ikke mange å dele på. Men forklaringen er også at store avstander fører til mye transportutslipp. I tillegg har Australia ufattelig mange gruver, som ofte ligger så avsides til i så ugjestmilde strøk at man over lang tid ikke har sett noen grunn til å pålegge noen å tenke på miljøet der. Og da går det som det går.

I promise I like Australia, but the fact of the matter is that one of the first things I did was to go to a beach outside Perth, and what met me there was a patch of oil in which a dead pigeon was floating. This is a good opportunity to inform you that Australia is actually the most polluting nation on the planet, measured per capita. They beat both the USA and China with a large margin.

Some of the reason for this is obviously that the country has few citizens, so there are not many to divide the polluting between. Another part of the explanation is that the vast distances inside the country makes for much pollution from transportation of people and goods. Additionally, Australia has a disproportionally large number of mines of all kinds. They are often located far away from towns and cities, in areas that are hostile by nature, so to speak. Hence, there has been little pressure to make the mining operators be kind to the environment.

Poor pigeon.
